Basketball • Spinal Injury Recovery
Athlete who overcame a severe spinal injury and returned to play
I practice basketball. During a game, I fell and injured my back. Specifically, I fractured my spine in the T6 and T7 vertebrae and also had a fissure.
My recovery process lasted approximately five to six months.
Unfortunately, I was unable to continue training or playing. I lost a lot of my physical abilities, especially strength and overall athletic performance.
I felt very sad because I thought I would never be able to play the sport that I love again.
Yes, I felt a lot of fear about returning because every movement caused pain. Also, doctors told me that surgery was not an option, so I was afraid that I would stay like that permanently.
Yes, it did. I never thought something like that could happen to me, but I realized that injuries can happen to any athlete at any time.
The most difficult part was at the beginning, when I could not move. Everything felt very difficult, and I was afraid that I would never recover.
What helped me the most were the doctor's encouraging words and knowing that I was not being pressured to return quickly. I was able to recover at my own pace.
I would tell them to be brave, to see a doctor immediately, and to never do anything without professional medical advice.
Seek professional medical help immediately - don't try to diagnose or treat yourself
Recovery takes time - be patient with your body and don't rush back
A strong support system and positive mindset are crucial for recovery
